RX: Alex Hvaal grabs his first

Category: ERC, News Posted 16.09.13 01:25 by

After Petter Solberg stalled his Citroën DS3 at the starting grid of the Final and Liam Doran had to retire with his burning DS3 it was Alexander Hvaal who grabbed his first ever ERC round victory in SuperCars.

Day 2 at Greinbach in Austria’s Styria region started at 9 o’clock with the usual warm-up session, eventually dominated by Petter Solberg. Second fastest to “Hollywood” was Liam Doran, while the Hansen Motorsport trio Alex Hvaal, Timmy Hansen and Timur Timerzyanov took the places three to five. Norwegian Tord Linnerud, who replaced Mats Lysen in the Renault Clio Mk3/5 for the first time, made it to sixth place here.

Heat 3 was ruled by Solberg, the Norwegian was very quick and made his 2:25.149 minutes to the fastest qualifying time of the weekend. Davy Jeanney followed in second place, but with 2:27.043 being almost two seconds slower. Liam Doran drove his DS3 to his third third fastest time, thereafter still holding the lead of the SuperCars ranking. Fourth fastest was Alexander Hvaal, Anton Marklund again in good form finished in fifth place, Tord Linnerud made it to the sixth fastest time.

For Höljes and Lohéac winner Andreas Bakkerud Greinbach turned out to be the wrong place. After the warm-up his mechanics had to repair his broken engine very quick, but after spinning his DS3 “BabyBlue” retired and did not collect a time. Finishing in poor 14th place in Heat 4, after a jump start and the additional Joker Lap, the Norwegian ended qualification in 13th place, thereby just missing out a place in the semi-finals for to heading home with poor four championship points only.

Heat 4 was the first run taken by Liam Doran, runner-up was Petter Solberg and third quickest Alexander Hvaal. Tord Linnerud drove here his best race, finishing as fourth fastest. Fifth fastest became Anton Marklund, his fellow Swede Peter Hedström reached the chequered flag in sixth place.

Semi-Final 1 was bagged by Liam Doran, second man over the finish line was Stig-Olov Walfridsson, and third Tord Linnerud. However, the Norwegian was not allowed to the Final, but instead became excluded for aggressive driving. All advantage from this decision went to Davy Jeanney, the Frenchman was granted another chance to better his final result. For the Swedes Peter Hedström and Anton Marklund, who finished fourth and fifth respectively, the Greinbach weekend was over now.

Petter Solberg won Semi-Final 2 from Alex Hvaal and Timur Timerzyanov. ERC returnee Frode Holte, who had an argument with Timur Timerzyanov in the opening lap, eventually finished in sixth place. The two other non-Finalists were Timmy Hansen who became fourth and Andy Scott who finished in fifth position here.

While Liam Doran stormed into the lead of the all decisive Final it all went wrong for Petter Solberg. Due to an electronic failure his car did not move and that was that for “Hollywood”. Behind Doran that man Alex Hvaal was already in second place, followed by his teammate Timur Timerzyanov. Stig-Olov Walfridsson was fourth for a while, but got passed by hard charging Davy Jeanney, before the Frenchman decided to do his Joker Lap. Timerzyanov was the next one to play his joker, but the Russian remained ahead of Jeanney.

After leading the Final well for about half the way to the chequered flag Liam Doran found his Citroën in smoke and flames, and just a little later he was forced to give up. All of a sudden it was Hvaal who was leading now, and the Norwegian thankfully grabbed the chance to subsequently fly to his first European championship round victory. After doing his Joker Lap rapid Hvaal was still ahead of Timerzyanov and Jeanney, somewhat to his own surprise. “Stecka” Walfridsson finished in fourth place, his best 2013 result yet. “I am really lost for words,” said Hvaal soon after his maiden victory. “This is my first win in SuperCars, it’s amazing. Last year I got lots of second and third places, but this year has been terrible for me. Now we have finally proved that we really have the pace.”

Latvian youngster Reinis Nitišs ruled the Super1600s category once again to eventually claim the Austrian event with maximum points as well as his first European title. After winning Semi-Final 1 the Set Promotion team member took also the Final by a start-to-finish victory. Dane Ulrik Linnemann finished second with Russian Ildar Rakhmatullin in third place.

In the TouringCars category Irishman Derek Tohill did it quite similar to Nitišs. The Ford Fiesta campaigner won the Greinbach race with the 28 points maximum and can also not be beaten in the championship standings any more. Swede Robin Larsson finished second, Czech Roman Častoral scored third position.

After not participating in the French RallycrossRX round at Lohéac the JRX contenders were back on the block in Austria. Swede Kevin Hansen claimed victory from his compatriots William Nilsson and Magda Andersson. Before Buxtehude all-season series leader Nilsson has only a one point margin to Hansen left now.
