Former Polish champion Marcin Wicik returned to the sport to take part in Round 6 of the new Polish Rallycross Cup series and to win the event.
Over the Independence Day [Monday November 11] weekend in Poland there have been two final rounds of the inaugural Polish Rallycross Cup. After several years of absence a national Rallycross series returned to the track in Toruń, due to the involvement of the drivers. With the aid of their favourite organisers they want to reactivate this discipline in their native country. The venue MotoPark Toruń, formerly known as Tor Toruń, is completely renovated now. It has got a new surface and about half of the track has been modified as well. A Joker Lap section was also created, being on par with those of the best Rallycross tracks in Europe.
The comeback of the sport of Rallycross to Toruń tempted Marcin Wicik to compete once again. The 42 years old quadruple Polish Rallycross champion decided to challenge the younger competitors in the Cup Round 6 on Sunday November 10. He also wanted to check his current form, as well as the competiveness of his Ford Fiesta Mk6 SuperCar. Other former champions, like Bohdan Ludwiczak, Adam Kozak and Łukasz Zoll, took also part in the event. Wicik quickly found himself back in the business, setting the fastest times in all three qualifying runs.
The final race took place with less visibility and under light rainfalls. After the start Wicik immediately took the first place and then increased his lead. “After the third lap I was racing with my finger in the nose,” laughed the Ford campaigner later. Łukasz Zoll claimed second place, here driving his Škoda Fabia Mk1 for the first time. Third over the finish line was Robert Czarnecki in his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo, while Adam Kozak crashed his four-wheel driven Renault Clio Mk2 out of the event early.
