Only at the eleventh hour it was decided that 14 years old William Nilsson will race a SuperCar Lites vehicle in the all-new Swedish RallyX series.
In 2013 former kart driver William Nilsson from the for Rallycross fans well-known town of Tomelilla (home of the former ERC track Svampabanan and Rallycross legend Rolf ‘Myggan’ Nilsson) drove his first ever Rallycross season. His immediate success was to win the first three rounds of the JRX European Rallycross series and to score three second places in the remaining three JRX events. With the result, that the teenager finished the season as runner-up to JRX Cup winner Kevin Hansen, eventually having scored just one championship point less than his compatriot.
William Nilsson: “It’s so cool that I fixed this. Unfortunately there will be no JRX Cup this year, as there are not enough drivers to commit. Therefore, the series has been dropped from the calendar. However, now I get the great chance to be involved right from the beginning in the SuperCars Lites programme and to learn all about it in the new Swedish RallyX series. This will be a great benefit for me and my the development of my racing career. I’m going to compete against many well experienced drivers; the competition will be razor-sharp.”
SuperCar Lites is a one-make class for upcoming talents, in which the skills of the drivers are more important than the development of the machinery or new parts as all competitors race under the same conditions in identical vehicles. SuperCar Lites is a support category to the SuperCar class, both in the World Rallycross Championship and the Swedish RallyX series. In Sweden the STCC organisation from 2014 on owns the rights of the SuperCar und SuperCar Lites events that will partly run alongside their all-tarmac Touring Car races.
The RallyX series will kick off the coming tomorrow at the Ring Knutstorp outside of Kågeröd in Sweden’s most southern province Skåne, not far away from William Nilsson’s hometown Tomelilla. “I’m eager to race, of course, but I will only run to teach myself. Currently I have no chance to win; hopefully this will change later on. We got the car only yesterday and I look forward to a couple of testing laps before the serious business begins. Therefore, I try to take all as easy as possible for this weekend,” says the 14-year-old prior to his Lites debut.
