WRX: Hell to Höljes heaven

Höljes in Sweden gets set to hold round six of what has become the most prestigious Rallycross event in the entire championship.

The Höljesbanan occupies a special place in the heart of every Rallycross fan. Since 1991, when Höljes hosted its first ever European Rallycross Championship, it has continued to be both a fan and driver favourite. Over the years the event has always been the most coveted event in championship, and this year it marks the mid-way point of the season; so often has it been the turning point for many drivers.

The second Scandinavian event in the series, the RX track in Höljes is located in the Varmland,  in the mid-west region of Sweden. RX fans makes the pilgrimage to this Rallycross Mecca from all over Europe – with the Rallycross spectacular and the to experience the renowned party atmosphere. The event regularly attracts over 25,000 eager supporters and spectators.

Home driver Mattias Ekstrom has dominated the event for the past two seasons, taking the win in both 2014 and 2015 and will be looking to make it a hat-trick of wins on his pursuit of his first World RX title.

But he faces stiff competition.

With five events down, so far, there have been three different Supercar winning drivers, with Solberg and Ekstrom locked in a fierce battle for the 2016 title.

19 Supercars are confirmed as entries in the World RX, where the 17 permanent drivers headed by championship leader Mattias Ekstrom will be joined by regular driver Davy Jeanney and Sweden’s Richard Goransson, who will return with an OlsbergsMSE Ford Fiesta Supercar.

In the Euro RX Supercar category, which is currently led by Sweden’s Kevin Hansen, 28 drivers will compete, including a first start of the season for Renault Clio driver Lukas Walfridson.

More than just another race, Holjes is a happening; Rallycross beasts get set to descend on the tiny village of Holjes to challenge for the most iconic event of the championship.
