GRC at SEMA – featuring TT

Category: GRC, News Posted 17.10.12 20:50 by

The Finale of the 2012 GRC series will take place on a tight track in Las Vegas, but features more loose sections than the previous events – and a guest appearance of European champion Timur Timerzyanov.

One of the main complaints about the 2012 Global RallyCross Championship rounds was that the in connection with NASCAR and IndyCar races used venues had none or not enough dirt on offer. Over here in Europe mixed surface tracks are vital for Rallycross and the American fans were right from the beginning also all but happy with their tarmac-only events.

For the great Finale, to be held on October 30 at a non-permanent track of the Las Vegas Convention Center grounds, this shall not be the case again. The track diagram indicates that the racing will go over at least 30% loose surface and that the competitors need to drive through a true water-splash (tagged ‘Whoops’), rather than powering their cars over wet tarmac, produced by a so-called ‘car-wash’ shower system as seen before.

“TT” to replace “Magic Marcus”

“When Marcus Grönholm confirmed that he wasn’t available for SEMA, we wanted a Rallycross driver of the very best calibre,” said Briton Mark Williams, who manages Best Buy Mobile’s Rallycross program. “And we very quickly landed on Russian Timur Timerzyanov, who dominated the 2012 European Rallycross Championship,” he added.

Timerzyanov comes from Tatarstan in the Russian Federation and will be making his debut in both a Ford and competing in the United States. However, he will renew his familiar battle with American Tanner Foust, a contest that has raged across Europe for the past two seasons. After winning the Championship (with Foust third), Timerzyanov comes to Foust’s home turf determined to close out the Rallycross season with a winning GRC performance.

“I am excited by this opportunity to race in America and to try the Ford Fiesta Mk7 that Tanner has used against me all year,” said 25 years old Timerzyanov. “GRC runs very different courses to those I am used to but I know the Best Buy Mobile Ford Fiesta is a really good car so I expect to be at the front of the field,” said the 2012 FIA champion from Kazan.
