GRC: VW joins Global RX

Category: GRC, News Posted 07.01.14 16:22 by

Volkswagen Motorport has revealed its plan to join the Global RallyCross series in the United States, first with Polo and later with Beetle SuperCars.

“Together with ‘Andretti Autosport’ we will also be involved in the Global RallyCross series in the future,” said Volkswagen’s Jost Capito, who has over the last couple of years shown his huge interest in Rallycross in Europe as well as in the US. “Motorsport in America and Europe differs significantly. One cannot establish a European sport in the States. Therefore, we are going to use the GRC, a series extremely well received by American race fans. RallyCross is the fastest growing motorsport in the United States.”

The plan is to start the 2014 season with two VW Polo Mk5 SuperCars (of Marklund Motorsport?), but later on (Summer X Games in Austin, Texas?) the new VW Beetle should be available, a car that has cult-status in the States. Two drivers shall fight for Volkswagen of America in the GRC series, their names will be revealed during the ‘Chicago Auto Show 2014’ (February 8 till 17), where the RallyCross programme will be officially launched. We at ERC24 expect either Tanner Foust or Travis Pastrana – or maybe both US stars to be the men in question.

In the summer of 2012 ERC24 got the first hints that the VW Beetle R is a Rallycross SuperCar in the making.
