Today it was announced that two WorldRX teams backed by the Swedish importer Volkswagen Group Sverige AB are going to make an attempt on the 2015 FIA World Rallycross Championship (WRX) series.
The Finnish and Swedish duo Toomas ‘Topi’ Heikkinen and Per-Gunnar ‘P-G’ Andersson is going to compete for Marklund Motorsport, while the Swedish and Norwegian pair for Kristoffersson Motorsport will be Johan Kristoffersson and Tord Linnerud. Both outfits were presented during a press conference in Stockholm. It was made clear that the teams operate independent from each other, the Marklund Motorsport and Kristoffersson Motorsport drivers will be racing in each of their own 560+bhp strong 4WD VW Polo Mk5 SuperCars. Two more Polo SuperCars will also enter the five rounds counting for the 2015 FIA European Rallycross Championship (ERX). Norwegian Tommy Rustad is going to represent Marklund Motorsport here, while his compatriot Ole Christian Veiby will race under the banner of the KMS team.
“Rallycross is the hottest motorsport just now, and we and our dealers think it feels incredibly exciting to be able to support a bid where two of Sweden’s best teams are aiming at becoming World Champion,” explained Sten Forsberg, Manager of VW Sweden.
German Jost Capito, Head of Volkswagen Motorsport, added: “The World Rallycross Championship enjoys increasing popularity: The races are compact, spectacular and varied. With Marklund Motorsport and Kristoffersson Motorsport joining Volkswagen is represented by two extremely professional privateer teams who develop and race their Polo RX SuperCars independently. The line-up and the calendar promise an exciting WorldRX season and we are confident that the Volkswagen drivers will be up there battling for races and the championship.”
“We were close in 2014 and now, of course, our aim is to win both, the individuals title as well as the team gold,” says Jan Marklund, team manager of Marklund Motorsport, which since last year has the status of an official Rallycross team for Volkswagen Motorsport.
“For KMS this means that we will accelerate our efforts. Since the new World series attracts the top teams and drivers we want to be in it as well. And we expect to be competitive right from the start,” claims Tommy Kristoffersson, himself one of the leading FIA European Rallycross Championship regulars of the early 1990s, father of Johan and team manager of Kristoffersson Motorsport.
