Marklund set for SuperCars

Category: April, ERC, News Posted 18.04.12 11:01 by

Swedish youngster Anton Marklund, currently competing and winning in the TouringCar category of the ERC, has set his focus on a future with a VW Polo in the SuperCar class.

Marklund Motorsport (formerly known as Bergteamet Motorsport) has set its focus on the SuperCars category again. For to re-enter the highest class of the European Rallycross Championship the team from the Skellefteå area of the North of Sweden has signed an agreement with Volkswagen Sweden to represent the German car manufacturer with two brandnew VW Polo SuperCars based on the Polo Mk5/6R model. The cars will be prepared by their partner Ingvar Gunnarsson Motorsport, IGM has total freedom of creating a winning concept. The Swedes are already working on the project and are set to debut the all-new machinery in the 2013 ERC opener, presumably at Lydden Hill in England.

It has already been decided that Swedish rising star Anton Marklund, who is currently racing a Ford Fiesta Mk7 RWD in the TouringCar category of the ERC, will be the Number One of the new SC squad. A spare car will also be available and mainly used for promotion purposes. However, it is not ruled out that the second Polo will be used by another driver that matches the high aims of Marklund Motorsport. It is said that contacts have been made, although there are no names mentioned yet.

Jan Marklund, father of Anton and president of Marklund Motorsport, hails the Volkswagen Polo as the optimal vehicle for creating a winning concept. “We’re making a really serious investment to present a Swedish winner in SuperCars during the next few seasons. The VW Polo is an optimal car for size and weight distribution and I am totally excited about the prospects”, claims Marklund senior.
