GRC: Arpin & Foust take rounds

Category: GRC, News Posted 20.06.16 11:52 by

Two days, two rounds: The fourth and fifth rounds of the 2016 Global Rallycross Championship have been won by Steve Arpin and Tanner Foust.

Steve Arpin took victory in fourth round of the 2016 Global Rallycross Championship on Saturday (June 18) at Daytona International Speedway. Teammate Brian Deegan finished second, while OlsbergsMSE’s Sebastian Eriksson gained the final step of the podium.

The day had been halted due persistent lightning that delayed the proceedings until the early evening, with Arpin winning the first semi-final in dry conditions and Foust winning the second in wet conditions. A chaotic final saw Scott Speed (VW Beetle) take the lead initially, before Foust used the joker lap section to reclaim the lead early on. After Foust spun from first place, collecting second-place Patrik Sandell (Ford Fiesta Mk7), Speed reclaimed the lead, but after driving with the car on fire for a lap and a half, he finally had to pull off after taking the white flag. Eventually Arpin won it from Deegan and Eriksson.

The second event of the weekend at Daytona Beach, FL – round five of the 2016 Global Rallycross Championship – went to Tanner Foust (VW Beetle) on Sunday (June 19). For Foust his third win in this year’s Global Rallycross series after earlier success during the double header season opener. Foust, who extended his championship lead with the victory, led teammate Scott Speed (VW Beetle) and OlsbergsMSE Sebastian Eriksson (Honda Civic Mk10 Coupé) to the finish line.

Crews for Foust and Sandell spent the entire night repairing their vehicles after extensive damage from Saturday’s final. Speed, meanwhile, switched to a third Beetle after damage from yesterday’s fire proved too extensive to repair overnight. However, all three drivers were able to continue on Sunday, with Speed in fact posting the fastest qualifying lap before being penalized for the vehicle change.

The final was red flagged after contact between Speed and Austin Dyne (Ford Fiesta Mk7) displaced a tire barrier in turn six. On the restart, with nine cars, beating and banging between Foust and Eriksson wasn’t enough to displace Foust from the lead, while Speed shot ahead to fourth from his third row starting spot. As Foust extended a lead over Eriksson and Joni Wiman (Honda Civic Mk10 Coupé), Speed took a late-race joker lap to grab second and give Volkswagen a 1-2 finish. Both OlsbergsMSE drivers came in third and fourth.
