Engine wizard and Rallycross driver Julian Godfrey’s win over Pat Doran at Pembrey sends British title duel to final round.

Title holder Julian Godfrey took his second event win of the year in the penultimate round of the MSA British Rallycross Championship, increasing his lead in the series from three to eight points and ensuring that the final round of the year at Croft (Yorkshire) in three weeks will determine the outcome of the championship.

Godfrey was head-to-head with title rival Pat Doran throughout the event, Doran taking pole position for the A final but Godfrey gaining the bonus points for setting fastest times in practice and the qualifying heats. At the start of the final Godfrey made a clean launch, but Doran’s Citroën DS3 baulked and was slow away from the grid. The start set the pattern for the race, Godfrey keeping his Ford Fiesta Mk6 ahead all the way, Doran chasing hard but never quite able to compensate for the ground lost at the start.

Behind the lead duo, Andy Grant (Ford Focus) ran third almost all day, while Gary Pusey and Simon Horton were evenly matched in their Subaru Imprezas, Horton the better of the pair entering the final, but Pusey then going ahead to place fourth ahead of Horton and Ireland-based Pole Greg Kalinecki who ran his Lancia Delta HF integrale in the class to gain points in the event that also counted as the first round of this winter’s Irish championship.
