Hansen Motorsport driver Timur Timerzyanov takes Round 4 of the ERC, ahead of Tanner Foust and Mats Lysen. Andreas Bakkerud wins Super1600s and Derek Tohill takes TouringCars.

Timur Timerzyanov collects full points from ERC Hungary winning dramatic A final. The Russian driver took the lead from pole position and shot into the lead, neck and neck with Tanner Foust into the first corner. Third place starter Michaël De Keersmaecker became an immediate casualty, making hard contact with the tyre wall. Davy Jeanney moved into second place exchanging places with Foust temporarily. Foust was the next driver to take his Joker Lap, leaving the leading pack (Timerzyanov, Jeanney and Hvaal).

As the race neared its final lap, Hansen Motorsport driver Alexander Hvaal headed for his Joker Lap, with Foust making up significant ground in his pursuit of Timerzyanov. With the Russian opting to take his Joker, Foust pushed forward, and a mistake by Timerzyanov upon his exit looked to have awarded Foust the race. Incredibly the Russian made it back to the front, holding in to cross the line to take the win. Timerzyanov now leads the SuperCars standings going into round five.

Tanner Foust followed taking second place and young Norwegian Mats Lysen managed to move up the final, taking the final position on the podium. Alexander Hvaal took fourth place, Frenchman Davy Jeanney fifth. Liam Doran exited the race early after making heavy contact with Timerzyanov and then the tyre wall during the last lap. The Brit was subsequently taken to hospital to have x-rays after the impact appeared to have injured him. Damage to the car was also heavy.

Timerzyanov speaking after: “I am very happy with my performance this weekend and it is great for me to get the win. We made some small changes to the car after Austria last weekend, and I was happy with the car, it was a lot better. I personally made that mistake in the Joker Lap, and hearing Kenneth on the radio say ‘joker’ I knew that I had entered the lap with too much speed. I made a last second turn and managed to use my throttle to get out, exiting on the outside of Tanner. Tanner put pressure on me from the start, and once I passed him I continued to drive my own race.”

Timerzyanov claims his second consecutive event win and is now in serious contention for the 2012 title. His attitude is that of a champion, much like his driving, This may well be a turning point in the season.

Set Promotion competitor Andreas Bakkerud once again triumphed in the Super1600s class. The Norwegian got off to the best possible start from the outside, immediately taking the lead in what turned out to be a start-to-finish victory. Ulrik Linnemann gave aggressive chase but could not catch “Mr Baby Blue”. Krzysztof Skorupski was also unable to catch the Norwegian. Linnemann and Skorupski finished second and third respectively. Set Promotion driver Jussi-Petteri Leppihalme crashed out early on.

Bakkerud shortly after his victory: “It is great to get another win in the ERC. I love this track, and the fans here are amazing. We made a very good start and I drove my own race from here, I am very happy.”

Irishman Derek Tohill made the A final his third consecutive win, completing wins in the second heat, third and the six lap final. Tohill  got off to a great start, beating Koen Pauwels and Anton Marklund to the first corner. Roman Častoral made a surprisingly bad start, opting to take his Joker Lap first. Tohill seemed to hold on to his lead with ease, driving a faultless race, and crossing the line ahead of Swedish youngster Anton Marklund and Častoral.

“The circuit here can bite back hard, but I am very pleased that I managed to drive a very controlled race. We knew that I would be driving alone, as we had no radio contact even before the start of the final. I was slightly worried initially, as I knew pole position did not have the best line into the first corner. Therefore we had to make sure we made a good start, which we did. It was hard because there were cars everywhere, yellow flags and the final was six very long laps, but I enjoyed the race and think that the circuit here is one of or maybe the best in the ERC,” said Derek Tohill.
