VW set to join GRC

Category: GRC, News Posted 07.08.12 01:57 by

Volkswagen Motorsport is interested in a commitment for the 2013 Global RallyCross Championship (GRC) and the proposed European X Games events.

Volkswagen Motorsport in Germany is ready to start building a 600bhp strong VW Polo Mk5 SuperCar version for the 2013 Global RallyCross Championship (GRC). The impetus came from their new motorsport director since May 1, Jost Capito. The former Ford man is interested in the sport of Rallycross at least since his cooperation with Andréas Eriksson to launch the Ford Fiesta Mk7 in the USA. For the 2009 runnings of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC) the Swedish Rallycrosser as well as OMSE principal and the German (by then ‘Director of Global Performance Vehicles and Motorsport Business Development’ for Ford Motor Company) where the powering force behind the project of the 5-doors Fiesta Mk7 for Finn Marcus Grönholm and the 3-doors Fiesta Mk7 for Eriksson himself.

Capito has recently attended the X Games 18 in Los Angeles where the idea for the 2013 commitment startet to ripe. Volkswagen’s marketing boss Stefan Moser confirmed that the German car manufacturer is highly interested in the format of the GRC series and especially the proposed European X Games events [Barcelona in May and Munich in June 2013]. “According to Jost [Capito] is what he saw during the X Games the almost perfect sport for us. It has all we need, including young spectators in an urban area. Global RallyCross is perfectly to cover and easy to understand,” claimed Moser and continued: “People in the streets don’t understand how the World Rally Championship works. WRC is not like Formula 1. But Rallycross offers cool door-to-door racing, as opposed to one car on timed stages against the clock. In 2013 running a car for the X Games and in the GRC series, why not? Markets grow very fast all of the time, and we at VW have always been interested in good motorsport markets.”

And to think out of the box we at ERC24 remember our news of April 18 about the VW Polo Mk5 SuperCar plans of Swedish youngster Anton Marklund…
