RX: World series approved

The meeting of the World Motor Sport Council, which was held today in the Croatian town of Dubrovnik, has approved the creation of a FIA World Rallycross Championship.

From today’s FIA WMSC meeting at Dubrovnik in Croatia: “Following the proposal by the Promoter of the FIA European Rallycross Championship, the WMSC has approved the creation of a new FIA World Rallycross Championship from 2014, on the condition the calendar is based on a total of 11 or 12 events, with nine or 10 European events plus one event in Asia or Africa and one event on the American continent. The formats of the FIA European Rallycross Championships for the support categories, TouringCar and Super1600, are maintained, with the calendar comprising the European events in the World Championship. The format of the European Championship for the flagship category, SuperCar, will be adapted and concentrated over five of the 10 European events in the World Championship. This will also have a specific classification for non-permanent drivers not entered in the entirety of the World Championship.”

In Sweden it was decided that next year the STCC series has Rallycross events running alongside its Touring Car races. The new championship will carry the name ‘Rallycross SuperCar Scandinavia’ and will consist of a total of six events, of which four run under STCC auspices. Three STCC Rallycross events will be run at Ring Knutstorp, Mantorp Park and Tierp Arena, while the fourth venue is not decided yet. Kristoffersson Motorsport (KMS) and OlsbergsMSE (OMSE) have already agreed to take part.

Swedish former Rally and current Rallycross ace Stig-Olov Walfridsson has decided to pull the plug on racing. After having done Rallying and Rallycross over a period of 32 years “Stecka” is simply tired. “I possibly will do the SRC Finale at the Kinnekulle Ring [on October 5] as my last event. But this is still uncertain, because the car is not in good shape after Germany, and the entry for Götene is also pretty thin so far. If not, it’s over now, this is carved in stone,” said the five times Swedish Rallycross Champion [1996, 1997, 1998, 2009, 2010] to his local newspaper ‘Värmlands Folkblad’ today.
